“July 1 Is Ghana’s Real Birthday” — Mahama On Making It A Statutory Holiday Again
President John Dramani Mahama has announced the reinstatement of July 1 Republic Day as a statutory public holiday, now designated as Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

Speaking at the 2025 Supernatural Empowerment Summit on May 4 at Perez Chapel in Accra, Mahama underscored the historical and spiritual importance of the date, calling it the day “the true Ghana was born.”
“July 1 is our Republic Day our real birthday as a nation. Though we gained independence in 1957, we remained a dominion under the British Empire,” he explained. “It was on July 1, 1960, that we became a republic and fully severed colonial ties. That’s the day Ghana truly became Ghana.”
