Chairman Wontumi Begins Hunger Strike, Refuses Food Until Released – Minority Chief Whip Alleges
Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip in Ghana’s Parliament, has revealed that Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has begun a hunger strike while in custody—refusing to eat until he is released.
Wontumi, who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. His arrest stems from an ongoing investigation into allegations of illegal mining (galamsey) and unauthorized encroachment into protected forest reserves.

Prior to his detention by EOCO, Wontumi had turned himself in to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning.
According to Hon. Annoh-Dompreh, the hunger strike is Wontumi’s form of protest against what he sees as unjust detention and politically motivated legal action. The MP expressed concern about the potential health risks associated with the hunger strike and urged for a swift resolution to avoid further complications.
