Kuami Eugene Pleads With Mahama To Slow Down Cedi’s Rise Amid Forex Concerns
Award-winning Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has taken to social media with a lighthearted plea to former President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to step in as the Ghanaian cedi continues to strengthen rapidly against the U.S. dollar.
In a lighthearted yet revealing post on X (formerly Twitter), award-winning musician and 2020 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Artist of the Year, Kuami Eugene, weighed in on the rapid appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
Expressing a blend of humor and concern, he wrote:
“We beg Pres. @JDMahama for slow down small, my dollar reserves all dey go waste. I’m happy and sad at the same time.”
His comment reflects growing sentiment among Ghanaians who hold savings in foreign currencies, as the cedi’s sharp rise since early April has significantly impacted dollar-denominated reserves.
Since April 1, the Ghanaian cedi has appreciated from approximately GH₵15 to $1 to around GH₵10 to $1 — a gain widely seen as a sign of economic recovery. However, while the strengthening currency is being welcomed in some circles, it has sparked concern among diaspora communities and local investors reliant on forex-based assets.

Many Ghanaians in the diaspora have voiced their dissatisfaction, noting that the strengthening cedi is making remittances and dollar-based transactions more costly. Kuami Eugene’s post captures this sentiment, reflecting the concerns of those whose foreign-denominated savings or business dealings are losing value as the cedi continues to appreciate.
