National Free SHS Coordinator, Benetta Okiti Duah, announced the change during a press briefing held in Accra on May 27.

In the past, candidates selected their preferred schools only after completing the BECE.

There were also widespread concerns about poor placement outcomes, as many students reported being assigned to schools they had not chosen.

In response, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has revised the placement system.

Under the new policy, all BECE candidates will be required to choose seven schools before taking the exams. The goal is to streamline the placement process and reduce confusion.

National Free SHS Coordinator, Benetta Okiti Duah, announced the changes at a press briefing in Accra on May 27.

“This year’s placement process begins immediately and will end on June 6,” she stated. “Candidates seeking admission into SHS or TVET institutions must, with guidance from parents, guardians, and school authorities, select a total of seven schools—five main choices and two alternatives.”

She further explained, “Your five main school choices must be ranked in order of preference, with the first being your top choice. The two alternative schools should be selected from Appendix Three and will only be considered if you’re not placed in any of your top five.”
