The multiple award-winning artist clarified that his decision isn’t rooted in a sense of superiority over the awards scheme, but rather in the growing demands that come with being nominated—expectations he often finds difficult to meet because of his packed schedule.

During an appearance on TV3’s New Day on Friday, May 16, 2025, gospel singer Joe Mettle—known for his hit song My Everything”revealed that he has been contemplating stepping away from the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) for several years.

I think I do (have intentions to retire from the awards). For the past three or four years, I’ve been considering taking a step back. And it’s not because I feel I’ve outgrown the awards—definitely not,” he clarified.

There are certain obligations that come with the awards that I sometimes can’t meet. Once you’re nominated, you have to actively promote it. But there are times when so much else is going on that it becomes difficult to commit to all that’s required,” he said.

The gospel artist also responded to media speculation that his apparent distance from the awards is a sign of arrogance.

There’s this perception in the media that you’re acting superior, but that’s not the case—it’s mostly assumptions,” he said. “There are different seasons in life, and sometimes you realize you can’t commit to the awards the way you once did. That doesn’t mean you’ve outgrown them.”
