Ghana’s consumer inflation continued its downward trend for the fourth consecutive month, declining to 21.2% in April 2025 from 22.4% in March, according to the latest data released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The drop reflects a general easing in both food and non-food inflation, although food prices remain notably high at 25%, continuing to pressure households and policy planners.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra today (May 7, 2025), Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu stated, “The year-on-year inflation rate dropped to 21.2% in April 2025, primarily due to a slowdown in both food and non-food price increases, although food inflation remains elevated.”

Despite the annual decrease, monthly inflation ticked up slightly to 0.8% in April from 0.2% in March, suggesting early signs of renewed inflationary pressure, especially within the food sector. “On a month-to-month basis, food inflation rose, while non-food inflation held steady,” Dr. Iddrisu noted.

The data also revealed a disparity between inflation rates for locally produced and imported goods. Domestic items saw an annual inflation rate of 22.7%, compared to 17.7% for imports.

Additionally, month-on-month inflation for local goods was double that of imported ones, underscoring persistent internal supply challenges as a key factor behind rising prices.
