20% Increase In Transport Fares Suspended
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has announced the suspension of a planned 20% increase in public transport fares after a crucial meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
This decision follows public outcry and criticism over the absence of wider stakeholder engagement prior to the fare hike announcement.
Initially, Road Transport Operators had disclosed on Tuesday, August 5, that public transport fares across the country would go up by 20% starting Friday, August 8. The adjustment was expected to affect shared taxis, intra-city minibuses (trotros), intercity coaches, and cargo transport, in line with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares.
However, in a new statement issued on Thursday, August 7, the transport union confirmed that the fare increment has been put on hold, pending further consultations.
“Transport Operators have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares due to the lack of broader stakeholder engagement on the matter,” the statement noted.

Operators have instead been instructed to strictly adhere to the existing 15% fare reduction, which has been in effect since May 24, 2025.
